In the discipline of Japanese flower arrangement, shin is said to represent ‘heaven’ and usually the longest part of the work. Soe, the ‘earth,’ reaches around two-thirds of the shin. Hikae is linked to ‘human,’ which is half of the soe. I have translated this mathematical precision and philosophical appreciation into my Ikebana’s lineal solid wood tables and seating. According to certain rules that aim to achieve perfect harmony, beauty and balance, the watery grain patterns, precisely placed knots and graceful shadow lines convey the poetry or nature.
