This piece started it all. In the early 90’s, I was designing gardens that were heavily “Pacific Rim” influenced and could not purchase any benches that reflected that design – so I carved one myself.
A historic part of Vancouver’s redevelopment was flipping old warehouses into a restaurants and entertainment areas. Short square posts of 60” lengths were being removed from a building’s floor structure, which were ideal for a bench, so I purchased a couple of them.
I carved a Saddle bench from one of these posts and, although the design has changed a little from the original, it is still 60” long.
