Small World

Overview

Small World refers to the happenstance of discovering an unexpected connection within your community; a reminder that all of our journeys weave into an overlapping web of connectivity. The two sculptures are endearingly nicknamed Mama and Baby, as they mirror the dynamic of parents bringing their children to the community center, keeping an eye as they socialize.

This sculptural duo of monolithic creatures was born from urban salvage. Both were slated for removal for redevelopment purposes; Mama coming from Deep Cove and Baby from Horseshoe Bay. Their uncanny silhouettes stand tall at the West Vancouver Community Center, creating a focal point for community interaction both interpersonally and with nature. Their peculiar appearance is a reminder of the wonder of nature and the value of acceptance for the unfamiliar.

We intend for the sculptures to enliven children’s imaginations and encourage unstructured play. Meanwhile, they are a talking point for the adults to connect and rediscover child-like curiosity and effortless inclusivity. Brent has a personal connection with this story, having raised his own kids in West Vancouver, bringing them to the Community Center to play years ago.
